Another special flight this week. We have on the carpet a special guest and a friend, the musician and master drummer John Kwame Azraku, from the Kwame AfroVibes and from the Alma Afrobeat Ensemble. He takes with him his guitar and Samuel, a percussionist from kenya, to play live some songs inspired from his birthplace, Ghana,singed in Ewe language. To complete this ttip, we will add some of “our” music too.
We start the flight with Donald Byrd, and his track “Fufu”, from the 1970 LP Kofi, ten minutes of pleasure.
After that, Kwame will play exclusively for us some of his new songs. We start with “Mi wo no vi laa gbeme" and " Me de ku ku".
A pause to listen some other ghanaian music too from our vinyls. We start with the legendary Ebo Taylor and his track “Twer Nyame”, from the new Soundway compilation Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro Sounds & Ghanaian Blues 1968-1981. After this, is time for Third Generation Band and his "Because of Money".
Back on the carpet live with Kwame and Samuel for a new track, "Me le bo bjo", and one recorder track from the 70s music scene in Ghana, with Gyedu Blay Ambolley & the Steneboofs with “Simigwado”.
A last song from our guests, “Tro gi mé", and some funk to conclude the trip, with the new project of a friend, Ray Lugo's L.E.S. Express and their track “Get On Up”, with the special voice of Roxie Ray.

Welcome on this very special flight with the flying carpet. Today, we have the pleasure to travel with one of the composers without whom we wouldn't be able to understand the evolution of modern African music, that is Hugh Masekela, South African trumpeter born in 1939. Hugh tells us about the very beginning of his career, when he was given a trumpet by Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, the anti-apartheid chaplain who played a decisive role in his life. This trip is the first part of the journey, a jazzy trip where the trumpeter recalls his life until the 70's. We'll take you on a second trip around Christmas.

We start the flight of this week with the wonderfoul voice of Darondo singing “Let My People Go” from the homonimous LP, and we follow with a track from the new Breakestra's work Dusk Till Dawn, “Come on over (feat. Afrodyete)”.
Then, some afrovibes: we start with Najite and Olokun Prophecy interpretating the track “Honesty”, and we follow with two tracks of the Ghanaian Bookor Band, “Maya Gari” and “Onukpa Shwarpo”, from the compilation Bokoor Beats: Vintage Afro-Beat, Afro-Rock & Electric Highlife From Ghana.
More Africa, with a 11 minutes long track of mr. Ginger Baker, accompanied by Fela Kuti and Sandra Izadore, “Ariwo”, from his rare and nice 1972's LP Stratavarious. Then we go to South Africa, where
the group Harari play “Musikana” from the interesting compilation Afrika Underground Jazz Funk And Fusion Under Apartheid edited by Counterpoint records.
Some jazzfunk, with Ronnie Foster and his track “Chunky”, from the LP Two Headed Freap, edited by Blue Note in 1972.
Fot the landing, we go to Thailand, where we meet Kwan Jai & Kwan Jit Sriprajan and their incredible track “E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai”, from the tip album Siamese Soul Thai Pop Spectacular Vol.2, edited this year by Sublime Frequencies.

TheFlyingCarpet have a special trip this week, because we have a special guest on the carpet. Giorgio Degasperi, theatre director, cofounder of ZeroTeatro and hard improvisator will conduce us in the land of improvisation, from the origins of free-jazz to some exemple of free-improvisation, with a look on rituals.
We start the trip from the origins of free improvisation, with Lennie Tristano accompanied by Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh between others. We will listening two songs, “Intuition” and “Digression”, from the 1949's LP Intuition.
Next stop, the Jimmy Giuffré Trio (with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow) with two tracks, “Spasmodic” and ”Three Wee”, from the LP Free Fall recorded in 1962.
The next stop take the carpet more closed to the free improvisation, with the bass player Barre Philips and his track “Part I”, from 1979 ECM's album Journal Violone II, accompanied by John Surman on soprano sax and Aina Kemanis on voice.
Then, we will listening an excerpt of Anthony Braxton's “Composition n. 286 part. 2”, from the LP Six Composition.
We will landing this “improvised” trip with two friends of TheFlyingCarpet that explore in differents ways the territories of improvisation: Plunky with the group Juju, “Live Revolution (live)”, from Chapter 2: Nia (editeb by StataEast in 1974, and Anthony Joseph & Spasm Band with the track “Hummingbird” from their LP Leggo De Lion.

Then, a little excursion in jazz: we start with Sabu Martinez & Sahib Shihab and the track “The Distorted Sioux Indian”, from the recently edited Winds & Skins-The Swedish Radio Recordings 1978, and we follow with the guitar master Gabor Szabo and his track "The Fortune Teller”, from his wonderfoul 68's LP Dreams.
Next Step: we follow the discovering of the new volume, the 4th, of the Inspiration Information serie: the meeting between Jimi Tenor (and Kabu Kabu) & Tony Allen. We start with “Selfish Gene” and we follow with “Path To Wisdom".
Then we “Celebrate” with Ruth Tafebe And The Afrorockerz, from Holy Ghost, before to start the immersion in the 10 minute's soul anthem “Mother's Day” by The 24 Carat Black, from their cult LP Ghetto:misfortunes wealth”.

We take more altitude with the reinterpretation of the Isaac Hayes' classic “Walk on By” by El Michels Affair, from the tip album Truth & Soul Presents a Tribute to Black Moses.
Some afrobeat vibes with Amayo's Fu-Arkist-Ra and his track “Fist of Flowers”, from 2001's album Afrobeat Disciples, and with the brand new release of Inspiration Information serie. The n. 4 get togheter Jimi Tenor & Tony Allen; we start discover this LP with the track “Cella's Walk”.
We move to Americas, to find the bahamian combo Biosis Now with the funk anthem “Independent Bahamas”. We follow the excursion with two tracks of Ocote Soul Sounds And Adrian Quesada, “La Reja” and “El Pescador” from the astonishing The Alchemist Manifesto.

Welcome on the flying carpet - today, the sexy pilot and Anne are flying without the captain and they're taking you on a soul/funky trip, with an afrobeat break, an Ethiopian vibe and a cheesy finale. But first, we take off with a bit of poetry by The last Poets - Nubian II - followed by The Blackbyrds and the tune Unfinished business taken from the album of the same name. After that, we go funky with Bernard "Pretty" Purdie's Funky Donkey and then we listen to The voices of East Harlem and their song Right to be free. Then the trip changes direction and we hang out in Europe for a few songs. We stop in Belgium first with The Belgian Afrobeat Association and their crazy tune O Bruni blues taken from the album The King is among us. Then we fly to the Netherlands to listen to another tune by Mdungu - AfroWhat? and we finish our European tour with The Imperial Tiger Orchestra from Switzerland and the Ethiojazzy track Harer Dire Dewa. As the mood changes we decide to go to Ethiopia to listen to different styles, starting with Assèlètch Ashiné and Gètenesh Kebrèt singing Amlak Abèt Abèt - from the Ethiopian Urban Music volume 1 compilation and Set Alamenem singing Girma Beyene - from The best of Ethiopiques compilation. To fight his nostalgy we will have a latin influence floating throught the show.

Next stop Africa. First a track from the Syliphone huge library: Super Boiro Band and the track Samba from the 76's LP En Super Forme. After that, the

More bridges between the two side of the atlantic: Luis “Sabu“ Martinez and the track “Safari” from the homonimous LP.

Allen will be on the carpet in the next future!)
